I use a sonic depth checker to open the bowl and radius' as much as possible without breaking into the valve spring seat and I also do some combustion chamber work with race porting and recommend at least the 10.25:1 comp piston to go with it as the chamber work does add to the cc of the chamber and lowers compression slightly.

The exhaust port I finish to a polish for optimum flow as your not worried about fuel atomization on the exhaust side. Where the flow is good its a mild sand paper and where the flow will inevitably be slower such as the floor of the intake I use a coarser grit to help keep the fuel atomized. I finish the intake with various grit sand paper. so after opening the runner a bit I work on the long and short turn radius to open them up and get the angle of flow correct I also open up the bowl area and work on the angle where the seat meets the port and I shape the valve seat for the least disturbance in flow possible and also to help direct the flow. Trail porting I open the runner some but bigger isn't always better as the bigger the runner is the less port velocity your going to have. With the xr cam it couldn't hurt but the stock springs would be ok for a trail set up. I recommend aftermarket springs if your going to run a big cam. I do recommend new valves but if the current valves are in spec I do a mild lapp on them when I reassemble the head. I absolutely refuse to make money on a job that doesn't deliver horsepower and retained reliability. I know what I'm doing but I'm not too proud to turn down something I'm either not familiar with or I know I can't improve on. Since then I have worked at multiple performance shops and was the head mechanic at 2 of them. Many kids in my neighborhood had 185's and 200's and none could keep up thus I started building their engines and it all began.
I ported my first Honda 200 at the age of 12 and by 13 I had an oversized carb and welded my own custom head pipe. like I said I can do many other engines but my true love is the old Honda 200 engines. My porting obviously works the best with other mods but I can trail port the head to make horsepower on an otherwise stock engine. I also do work on the combustion chamber to help improve the flow past the valves ensuring the bigger ports can actually fill the cylinder. I use a sonic depth checker to ensure there is enough material left between the runner and the valve spring seat and I do work to all areas of the port as needed including the runner, the short and long turn radius, and the bowl.
